Every section links to our deeper guides, so you can jump from a meme straight to the real science.

A Short Timeline of the Capybara Craze

Capybara fame did not happen overnight. It built up slowly, mostly in Japan at first, and then exploded worldwide in the early 2020s. Here are the milestones most fans point to:

  • Japanese zoos and hot springs: Japanese zoos began letting capybaras soak in warm baths decades ago, and photos of capybaras relaxing in steaming water, sometimes with floating citrus, became a winter tradition. Read the story in our guide to capybara hot springs in Japan and the capybara yuzu bath.
  • 2007, the first fan blog: Japanese photographer Katsuhito Watanabe launched a capybara photo blog and went on to shoot huge numbers of capybara photos and videos, helping build an early online fan base.
  • 2013, “Animals Sitting on Capybaras”: a Tumblr and Twitter account posted photos of birds, monkeys, rabbits and cats perched on patient capybaras. It cemented the idea of the capybara as the friendliest animal on Earth.
  • 2020, “Ok I Pull Up”: a short clip of a capybara riding in a car, set to Don Toliver’s song “After Party,” went viral and turned capybaras into a meme staple.
  • 2021, Nordelta: news reports about capybaras roaming a wealthy gated community near Buenos Aires, built on their former wetland habitat, sparked a wave of jokes casting the capybaras as folk heroes.
  • 2022 to 2023, the Capybara Song: a catchy Russian track that repeats “capybara” again and again spread on TikTok, keeping the animal in everyone’s feed.
  • 2024 onward, games and merch: capybara mobile games, plush lines and gift ranges went mainstream. See our capybara Squishmallow guide and capybara gift guide.

Capybara Memes: A Quick Glossary

If you are new to capybara posting, these are the terms and formats you will see most often:

  • “Ok I pull up”: the opening lyric of “After Party,” usually paired with a capybara making a slow, dignified entrance. The joke is the contrast between a hype song and a totally unbothered animal.
  • “Capybara supremacy”: over-the-top edits declaring the capybara the greatest animal of all time, usually with dramatic music.
  • Friend to all animals: photos of birds, monkeys, ducks, turtles and even caimans sitting next to or on top of capybaras. We break down which of these friendships are real in posts like capybara vs anaconda and do crocodiles eat capybaras?.
  • Orange on the head: a capybara calmly balancing a citrus fruit on its head while soaking. Find out where it comes from in why capybaras like oranges.
  • “Chill” or “unbothered” capybara: the capybara as a symbol of calm, used for anything from exam stress to Monday mornings. Our explainer why are capybaras so chill? covers the science behind the vibe.
  • Capibara animada: cute cartoon and kawaii-style capybara art, hugely popular in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking communities. Browse our capibara animada cute gallery.

The Capybara Song (and “Ok I Pull Up”)

There are two “capybara songs” people usually mean. The first is “After Party” by Don Toliver, released in March 2020. Its opening line, “Okay, I pull up, hop out at the after party,” became the soundtrack to countless capybara clips after a September 2020 YouTube upload paired it with a capybara riding in a car’s passenger seat. The song itself has nothing to do with capybaras; the meme made the connection.

The second is the Capybara Song by the Russian band Stolichny Ona-Nas (often transliterated in different ways). Released in 2022, it repeats the word “capybara” over a bouncy beat, and it became a TikTok earworm in 2022 and 2023. Its comeback in 2023 even sparked friendly online arguments between generations about whether it was charming or cringe. Either way, it is the song most kids mean when they ask for “the capybara song.”

Japan, Hot Springs and Kapibara-san

Long before Western memes, Japan had already fallen for capybaras. Zoos such as Izu Shaboten Zoo made winter capybara baths a seasonal attraction, and families visit to watch the animals doze in warm water. The look of a capybara with half-closed eyes in a steaming bath fits perfectly with Japanese ideas of relaxation and “iyashi,” or healing calm.

Japan also gave the world Kapibara-san, a gentle cartoon capybara character from toy maker Bandai that has appeared on plush toys, stationery and an anime series. Its soft, round, sleepy design shaped how many people picture a “cute” capybara today. Capybara cafés and animal cafés later spread the trend; read our guide to capybara cafés for tips on choosing ethical places to visit.

Capybara Games, Apps and Cartoons

Capybaras have become a favorite character for game makers because they feel friendly and low-stress. The best-known example is Capybara Go!, a roguelike adventure RPG from Habby that soft-launched in September 2024 and launched worldwide in October 2024 on iOS and Android. Players guide a capybara hero through randomized daily events and auto-battles. You will also find capybaras in casual clicker, merge and pet-sim games, as stickers and emotes in chat apps, and as recurring background characters in animation.

The Plush and Merch Boom

The meme boom quickly turned into a shopping boom. Capybara plush toys, weighted plushies, keychains, slippers, mugs and pajamas are now everywhere, especially around the holidays. Squishmallows, Jellycat and countless smaller brands have released capybara designs, and many sell out every gift season. For our picks, see:

Why Does the Internet Love Capybaras?

Why this animal, out of thousands of cute species? A few reasons come up again and again:

  • The calm face: capybaras have a naturally relaxed expression, with small eyes high on a large, square head. Even when they are alert, they look serene, which makes them perfect for reaction memes.
  • Social, tolerant behavior: capybaras live in groups and often let other animals rest near them. In the wild, birds pick insects off their skin, which produces those famous “animal sitting on a capybara” photos.
  • An escape from stress: online culture loves symbols of calm. The capybara became a mascot for slowing down, taking a warm bath and not overreacting.
  • Surprise factor: many people first learn that a rodent can weigh as much as an adult human, and that novelty is shareable. See are capybaras rodents? for the details.
  • Easy to draw: a capybara is basically a rounded rectangle with ears, which makes it easy to turn into cartoons, plush toys and emoji. Kids can try it with our free capybara coloring pages.

The Real Animal Behind the Memes

Behind the memes is a real wild animal. Capybaras are semi-aquatic rodents from South America that can weigh roughly 35 to 66 kilograms (77 to 146 pounds). They live near rivers, lakes and marshes, graze mainly on grasses and water plants, and can stay underwater for several minutes to hide from predators. They are not endangered and are listed as Least Concern, but local populations still face hunting and habitat loss; learn more in our capybara conservation guide.

The internet craze has one downside: more people now want a capybara as a pet. Capybaras need a large pool, a companion, plenty of grazing space and specialist vet care, and they are illegal or permit-only in many places.
