A crocheted capybara is one of the most satisfying beginner amigurumi projects: the body is basically a soft loaf, the details are tiny, and the finished toy has that unmistakable calm capybara face. Below you will find our own free beginner capybara crochet pattern, a materials list, finishing tips and ideas for turning your capybara into a Christmas gift or ornament.
Why Capybaras Make Great Crochet Projects
Real capybaras are barrel-shaped, short-legged and blunt-nosed (see how big capybaras get), which translates beautifully into yarn. You only need basic stitches, there is no colorwork, and one ball of worsted yarn makes two or three small capybaras. They are also popular: capybara plush searches spike every December, so a handmade one is a gift people genuinely want (compare our capybara plush guide).
Materials
- Worsted-weight (#4) yarn: about 60 m (65 yd) of tan or caramel brown for the body, plus a small amount of dark brown for the snout and feet
- 3.5 mm (E/4) crochet hook (go one size smaller than the yarn label suggests so stuffing doesn’t show)
- Two 8–10 mm safety eyes or black embroidery thread (use embroidered eyes for babies and toddlers under 3)
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing
- Stitch marker, yarn needle and scissors
Finished size: about 10–11 cm (4 in) long. Use chunky yarn and a 5 mm hook for a bigger capybara.
Abbreviations (US Terms)
- MR – magic ring
- sc – single crochet
- inc – 2 sc in the same stitch
- dec – invisible decrease (sc2tog through front loops)
- (…) x6 – repeat 6 times. Work in continuous spirals and move your marker each round.

Body (tan yarn)
- R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- R2: inc x6 (12)
- R3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
- R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
- R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 (30)
- R6–R15: sc around (30) – 10 rounds; this makes the long “loaf” shape
- R16: (3 sc, dec) x6 (24)
- R17: (2 sc, dec) x6 (18). Insert safety eyes between R6 and R7, about 7 stitches apart, and start stuffing firmly.
- R18: (sc, dec) x6 (12). Finish stuffing.
- R19: dec x6 (6). Fasten off, close the hole and weave in the end.
Snout (dark brown or tan)
- R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- R2: inc x6 (12)
- R3–R4: sc around (12). Fasten off with a long tail, stuff lightly and sew over the starting ring (the “face” end) slightly below the eyes. Embroider two small nostrils with dark thread.
Ears (make 2, tan)
4 sc in MR, pull closed but do not join into a cone. Fold flat and sew on top of the head, about 2 rounds behind the eyes. Small, round ears are the key to a capybara look—don’t make them too big or it becomes a bear.
Legs (make 4, dark brown)
- R1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- R2–R3: sc around (6). Fasten off, no stuffing needed. Sew two near the front and two near the back on the underside so the capybara sits flat.
Finishing Touches
- Orange on the head: crochet a 6-stitch orange ball (6 sc MR, inc x6, 2 rounds sc, dec x6) and sew it on—a nod to the famous capybara-and-orange meme.
- Christmas ornament: make the body only through R12 for a mini capybara and add a loop of red yarn on top. Pair it with ideas from our capybara Christmas gifts and decor list.
- Scarf: chain 30 in red or green, sc back along the chain and tie around the neck.
- Blush: brush a tiny bit of pink blush or pastel chalk on the cheeks.

Common Beginner Problems (and Fixes)
- Holes between stitches: go down a hook size and use invisible decreases.
- Lost count: always move the stitch marker at the start of each round.
- Lumpy body: add stuffing in small tufts and shape with your fingers as you go.
- Head looks pointed: make R16–R19 a little tighter and stuff the face end extra firmly.
