Our articles are based on published sources: state wildlife and agriculture agencies for ownership laws, zoos and wildlife organisations for care and behaviour, and peer-reviewed research for biology and health. Where a source is used, we link to it.

Laws change

Exotic animal rules are updated often and can differ by county or city. Our state guides show when they were last reviewed. They are general information, not legal advice. Check with your state agency before buying an animal.

Updates and corrections

We review our most-read guides regularly. If you spot an error, contact us and we will check it and update the article.
